I have folks get some great deals in the $400-$600 range after rebates. You need to move pretty fast though as they usually sell out pretty quick. Stick with the well known brands. Moving up in price a Dell would be the way to go for sure as would Lenova or Toshiba.

Keep in mind you will also need a copy of office. You can get the student, teacher edition 2003 for $125 and put it on 3 pc's. It does not have access though. Which you probably dont need anyway. Youll need a printer too.

If you know where your going to school find out if they have any special requirements so theres no surprises. Also some schools and businesses get special deals from Dell so its always worth it to ask around for that.
