I was watching TV on CKWS a Canadian station we get in Utica, NY.
It was during 1978-1979. I was blown away how these guys rocked.
They had chaser lights and flames behind the drummer too! They had a huge TRIUMPH chaser light hung high. I called my friend Jay to find out his brother had Just A Game. A huge and loyal fan since.

I'm just curious how people on the Boards discovered Triumph. Please feel free to share your stories and let everyone know what your earliest memories of the band are.

I remember hearing Magic Power on the radio a few times and mentioning it to my older brother who then pointed out that he had the Allied Forces 8-track (you older fans will remember the 8-track). I was hooked after hearing the rest of the album. I went on the purchase Never Surrender then the rest of the catalog.

Oh mannnnnnnn!! How did I discover Triumph?? I was over a friends house one night when I was in High School. His brother was away at college and we would pillage his record collection. My friend Jim pulled out the Just a Game album and we listened. It was soooooooooooo good and I went out and got a cassette of it. Shortly after my parents divorced and left me behind and I went into a deep depression and I played that cassette constantly! Something about the song Just a Game made me understand my situation better. Between that song and Hold On back then, I was able to keep my sanity. I've been a die hard fan ever since!! Oh yeah...I own and love ALL of the Triumph Cds. smile.gif

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

In 1987, I was 16, I stepped into a rock-disco in my hometown - they played "never surrender" (the stages-version) and I was thrilled - what a voice, what a guitar, what a band! On the next few week I bought all Triumph-Albums , and I loved them all - especially the Songs "Just A Game" , "Hard Road" (always underrated) and the whole Allied Forces Album - the first time I heard "fight the good fight" I cried - honest!

They had a special sound, no typical "metal-lyrics", and a good balance between hard, melodic and instrumental sounds -

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

Hard Road is most definatly an under-rated song...oh...well this reminded me, I've already posted how I discovered Triumph, a few years ago my dad had a "kings of the 70's" or something cd and Hold On was a song on there...that got me interested in Triumph to begin with, but the other day when I was looking for cd's I saw one called "this is mullet rock" and at the end of the first disc was Fight the Good Fight, and then at the used cd store there was one called "masters of metal" which had Hold On on it, I bought the 2nd one because it had some other good songs on it...there were 3 canadian bands in the first 5 songs...Rush, then Triumph, then April Wine-Roller, which is my favorite April Wine song...so I think that some people if they were to buy it and were an 80's fan or something but didnt know Triumph, and heard them on a cd thats a possible way for them to create new fans today even if they arent still an active band
Can't you feel the magic, feel it everywhere, Can't you hear the music, there's something in the air, There's a celebration, deep within a song, Celebrate this feeling, you know it can't be wrong

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

I heard American Girls and got it confused with .38 Special's Fantasy Girl. (How and why I have no idea). Anyway Magic Power was the clincher. I already owned Progressions of Power but once I heard Allied Forces and Never Surrender I was hooked.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

Though I did it in the respective review, it's more appropriate here.

In July of 1978 I was in a record store with my brother and a record cover caught my interest, I had never heard the band and therefore the album either. My brother or the store clerk knew who the band was so I took the chance and bought it. Brought it home and accidentally played side two first, so the first Triumph song I ever heard was 24 Hours A Day.

I mean come on, when you are ten years old and desperately trying to one up your brother who has an edge on who knows better music, your going to like this:

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

I was introduced to Triumph by friends. One friend swiped his brothers copy of Just a Game and played it for me. A couple weeks later a different friend who played guitar, said " you HAVE to hear this guitar solo" and played "I live for the weekend" and then the entire Progressions of Power album. That was the beginning of my love affair with the music of Triumph.
