knetzke11: triumphrules: StreetFighterMan:agreed, as crazy and controlling as deyoung is, styx without him just doesn't really cut it for me. triumph and april wine would be an amazing show, with or without the big venues. i might actually prefer seeing them in a smaller place, thoose shows tend to be better. if they can get on with the scorpions though that'd be a killer for sure. maybe get krokus back over that would be a show to die for.... I'm a big Styx fan, but I think they are better off without Dennis. I think Styx without James Young wouldn't be the same, as he kept them a hard rock band, while Dennis wanted to turn them into a pop band. In my opinion James Young IS Styx. I think he has the best taste in music and is the best guitarist/singer the band has had.Does that mean Triumph is better without Rik!? hahaGil/Mike kept Triumph as heavy as they were. Rik's stuff got soft after he left and EoE was heavier. Just playing devil's advocate is all.

Rik's stuff got soft after he left and EoE was heavier. Just playing devil's advocate is all. Rik is a singer/guitarist, while Dennis is a singer (whose voice can be annoying) and a keyboard player, so theres a big difference there. Yes Gil and Mike kept them a hard rock band, but Rik never turned them mellow and always added his progressive touch. The result of The Sport of Kings was not his doing, was outside writers. Dennis started turning Styx into a pop band. I'm not too big on the Styx songs that Dennis wrote, more into the James Young stuff. His solo album was awesome too, while Dennis's was...er..not so good. Bash me all you want, but Dennis is off doing his classical religious thing, while Styx are still rockin' hard!!!
Have you listened to Rik's solo stuff? Rik was doing jazz and classical records! If you want to talk about solo efforts it really doesn't get softer than what Rik was doing...Spiral Notebook was probably the last real attempt Rik had at anything 'rock' until Airtime and that was incredibly mellow. Rik currently has like 2 or 3 acoustic/classical projects going on along with a possible follow up to Liberty Manifesto. I don't personally care if its hard/soft as long as the musicianship is good. I can't believe we haven't mentioned Tommy Shaw either...I would have to believe he had something to do with keeping Styx rocking after listening to the Damn Yankees stuff even though that was a little bit 'bubblegum' at times. For the most part though Damn Yankees was way heavier than Styx. I wouldn't call any of the guys in Damn Yankees excellent musicians though. Nugent is decent but he's not close to the same level as the greats, and Tommy, or any guitarist in Styx, isn't on the same level as Nugent.
If you want to use the solo album argument, or just other albums in general, then maybe Mladen was the best to play with Triumph since his work has been heavy and rock oriented forever. I'm not even saying I don't agree with you about Dennis DeYoung I just don't think you can knock a guy for making religious classical albums when Rik in ways almost was doing the exact same thing for a decade.

I like James Young too but Tommy Shaw played guitar and sang well also, DeYoung is a supreme talent and a superior vocalist.
I would have to agree 100% on this one. Rik knows how to get in touch with me if they would ever consider ZEBRA.
This was in response to a post on page 2...sorry.
I would love a Triumph/Zebra tour but I don't know if it's gonna happen because of ticket sales. Zebra probably wouldn't be the additional draw needed.
As far as Styx is concerned I like their older stuff which was harder rock. Dennis did write some smash hits, but I totally agree the Roboto thing killed them back in the day. It's good they can still play with some line-up changes and draw crowds, I met James Young a long time ago and he was very cordial signing autographs.
I respect them for having a pretty unique musical identity, but they just lack 'oomph' for me. Most of their stuff is too pop music, for my tastes. (with some exceptions) DeYoung is a talented guy, but I find his style too... I dunno... theatrical? Vaudeville? (There's some adjective I'm groping for I can't quite find!) I'm not a big keyboard fan to begin with, anyway.
Tommy Shaw is a talented singer/songwriter/guitarist. I liked him with Damn Yankees better, although I wasn't a huge fan. JY I don't know much about. (er, does anybody??)
Yes... Triumph/Zebra/April Wine would be frigging, awesome Ben! Three of my all time favorite bands on the same bill! I know... I know... not gonna happen. :(
Triumph/Scorpions still sounds about the most viable of anything I've heard. I'd like Triumph/UFO better, but as so many others, probably not enough drawing power. Even for such a great double bill, yeesh!
Why couldn't I have just made it easy on myself and been a Neil Diamond fan, or something?

Who's playing guitar with UFO now? I think its Vinnie Moore. I haven't ever really listened to Vinnie's stuff but I've heard that he's a monster player! What about Triumph/UFO/Scorpions!? That would be possible since Michael Schenker was in UFO for the longest time and the guys in the Scorps obviously know him since brother Rudolph plays with the Scorpions...I'm not sure what the relationship is currently like but that would be a huge show.
I like the Scorpions a lot, I also like Styx a lot........................
If Triumph does go out next summer/fall..................Triumph will be the headliner........................
So whomever they chose to be the opener will have to bring a core group of fans to the party.
I could see Zebra and Y&T maybe as the third group.....................the canadian angle would only work in Canada. ( Helix, April Wine etc)
We need to fire up the idea to Gil.................start sending/calling Metalworks notes etc.........
Show-em we care...............
