I didn't know what thread to post this comment, but since it's a little quiet here....

Does anyone know why Rik's solo on Never Surrender is slightly different than the original, that he always played live? The Sweden and Rocklahoma concert version seemed to be held back a little.

I read in an article recently, can't remember which one, that Dave Dunlop, being a student of the actual recordings of Triumph, helped Rik, Gil, and Mike get back to the recorded versions on a few songs.  Apparently, over years of touring, they had settled in to ways of playing some songs that were a little different than how they were actually recorded.

The version that I heard of the NS solo was that it was WAY reeled back.  Pretty much a totally different solo than the studio version.  Actually I think the solo Rik did live for the US festival was the same one that was on the studio track.  Maybe a difference or two, but I think that might have only been the one hand hammer/pull section he'd add for a couple songs in concert.

I just listened to one after the other...definatly reeled back from the studio version, perhaps Rik hadn't had time to get that solo down?  It might have been a while for him play it, even then you would think he would have had time by the Rocklahoma show.  I don't have that recording so I can't speculate there.  Definatly tuned down on the Sweden show though, not sure why.

Can't you feel the magic, feel it everywhere, Can't you hear the music, there's something in the air, There's a celebration, deep within a song, Celebrate this feeling, you know it can't be wrong

Ben you explained it they way I meant to, very well. I didn't want to make it sound like was ripping Rik. I really was just anticipating that killer solo we always enjoyed. I'm glad you understood what I was trying to have come across.

Yeah I noticed that too the first time I heard it and really don't know why they decided to go away from it.  IMO one of Rik's best solos, at least from a technical standpoint.  Reeled back is putting it lightly haha.
