A few more videos were posted this morning that didn't focus on the sidescreens. It gives a good idea of what the stage setup looked like ... not too bad ...

Here's a clip from the start of Rocklahoma. My two cents ... it left me lacking compared to the short clip from the Sweden Rock Festival that generated a lot of excitment with flashpots and a lot extraneous lighting (which even looked good in the sunlight). I know the WTLGD Rocklahoma clip is from the video screens, but it seemed like the opening lacked the energy the guys had always shown in their 80's shows. This is something I hope they work on if they head out in '09. I'd like to see some kind of "we're back!!! take this!!! kind of opening that makes me go ... wow! ... like those Verizon FIOS commercials that are airing on the TV ...

A final comment. I'm kind of bummed that Gil is back to ... singing ... on ... the ... beat ... (this wasn't totally unexpected given the long layoff). I've mentioned before that one of my greatest joys with each sucessive album and tour was that Gil just got better and better with his vocals when it came to the live shows ... culminating with Edge of Excess where you wouldn't have known he was drumming and singing simultaneously. This isn't meant to be a negative statement by any means ... I'm just as shocked and amazed as anyone that the guys have completed a second show ... just a noted casualty after such a long break. Gil's vocals remind me of how he sang on the "Progressions of Power" tour.
As an aside, I just had a 20 year highschool reunion and one of my longtime buddies reminisced about Triumph breaking up the year we graduated ... I told him "you won't believe this ... but ..."
I think the biggest problem was/is.
I like When the Lights go Down, but when you opening song is not something well known......
They should have opened with Allied Forces and got the crowd early.
I don't have any problem with the sound of the band. I think they sounded and played great ...........and they did a show for the core fans.
If they do a 2009 tour they should consider........ some later stuff..
A World of Fantasy, Tears in the Rain, Spellbound, Follow your Heart, Somebody's out There..
The biggest complaints about Rocklahoma that I have been hearing is they( some in the crowd)didn't know the songs....
Which is expected without playing for twenty years. No Radio or little airplay.
Its just the core of us fans that know the entire catalog.
Hank.

Curious, which version of that riff do you like more? I'm actually partial to the Edge of Excess version compared to the Addicted version. I still find it very interesting that Rik and Shotton decided to recycle that riff from the post-Rik Triumph era.

I like the EOE version better.
I wonder if Rik knew ? Did Shotten say hey Rik I have this cool riff thing, oh BTW Triumph used in EOE ?

Ha, yeah I have no idea. Would be interesting to know if Rik knew or not. If he didnt know before I doubt he knows now, I dont think EOE is too high on his list of what he wants to listen to...
Man, I feel ripped off, I wanted to hear the gong!!!!

Agreed. Maybe it sounds better from a different source other than YouTube ... but I doubt it. Hope the boys work up a stronger opening number in '09. Nevertheless, I've really enjoyed hearing the guys play the old tunes again (though there are certainly rough spots that need to be refined). The songs are much better than Rik doing them with his band. For the first time in 20 years the tunes "sound" like Triumph. Whether its a rim shot or cymbal crash at a distinct time or just how Mike strums those base lines ... without seeing who's playing you know its the guys. In fact, I've enjoyed how different, but the same, the songs are after the years.
It didn't sound too bad during the rehearsal or live................It shoudn't have been the opener( after 20 years)
But Triumph( it sounds to me) have been working on some new music or something.
Because the inro's to lights go down, lay it and some other stuff are new.
That being said I think they should have put those on the back end of the songs. If a average listener who knows maybe only a few Triumph songs doesn't recognize the start of lets say Lay it on the line, there is no crowd reaction( or little) until the song is recognized( it maybe too late at that point). IMO
And we have been talking about (Gil,Mike) for years now. That is the "UMPH" of the band that is complements Rik's playing and completes the circle.
