I remember the first time I ever heard the band was when I saw the "Allied Forces" video.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

Canadian bands from the 70s and 80s simply rule! Did not know any of you were familiar with Honeymoon Suite or Red Rider,I am surprised.
My first encounter with Triumph was spring 1983,my final year in high school. At that time I was a huge Rush fanatic and shared a biology class with another guy who told me about Triumph and how good they were.Triumph had just released Never Surrender and were about to play the US Festival in California, and I decided to give them a chance.I bought Never Surrender and within a month, had purchased all of their past albums up to that point.I then branched out into other Canadian bands who were active at that time.

Right around 1983 or so, I bought "Never Surrender" after hearing "World of Fantasy" on the radio constantly. Though I was familiar with their hits from past albums, this album changed my outlook on them. I then went out and bought previous albums "Just a Game" and "Allied Forces" and discovered how talented these guys really are. Thunder 7 (which is to date my favorite) was released in my senior year in high school and the first time I seen them in concert. The energy they have live was astounding and I have never looked back since!!

I think is was 14 or 15 or so, and i bought cheap versions of Just A Game and Rock n Roll Machine on vinyl back in 1990.

So i never really got to see the band.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

Since I wasn't born when Triumph had really started getting popular, I only found out about them through MTV. Since I'm a huge classic rock fan, I'm always watching the retro music videos, and someone requested to play "Follow Your Heart." That tune stuck with me all day, and it was only a matter of time before I was out at the music store looking for some CDs. Since then I've been hooked.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

I kept seeing all the old videos on MTV in 1982, when I was barely 11 years old. At first I didn't really hear anything special or different about them. But once a friend asked me if I saw the video by Jefferson Starship where they were flying through space on a guitar, I corrected him and said that was Triumph. He said he loved the song/video. (Say Goodbye) The next time it came on, I watched it and I thought it was a great song.

Next I heard Magic Power, Lay it on the Line, Hold On, Fight the Good Fight, and a few others and I was hooked for life.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

Seems that most people's exposure to them occured around the Allied Forces era, 1981-82. MTV was in its infancy and only had about 100 videos to play, so Triumph was featured in generous rotation as they had about 4-5 videos out at that time.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

I think I first took notice in 9th grade, around 1979. I ran around a little bit with a guy in school who was a total Triumph nut, he was always talking about Triumph and wearing their shirts. I was more of a AC/DC nut back then. I don't really remember seeing any Triumph videos on Mtv, but then there's lots of shit I don't remember. I didn't spend much time watching Mtv. I'd say I first truly discovered them in Feb '82 when I went to see them play for the first time. Again, the memories are pretty fuzzy, I know they rocked my world, enough to go see them three more times. biggrin.gif

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

It wasn't too long ago for me that I discovered triumph, unfortunately, but long enough by my standards. Regardless the first time I ever heard Triumph was on the radio in my garage just after I changed the oil on my car and changed the spica system filter it was fight the good fight.I vaguely remembered hearing a few years back but i thought damn this a good tune. As soon as I heard that guitar solo right after Rik lets out that hi-note at about 3 minutes where it kicks into the guitar solo I was hooked. Next day I went and spent half of my paycheck on every vinyl I could get my hands on at our local LP store of Triumph. Never fails to amaze me how much I like just about every one of their songs. An don't sweat being 17 man i'm only 19. I have to say my dad was the hugest moving force in my life as far as music went. So his taste became mine.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

My first exposure was the radio. THe first song I ever heard by the band was 'Hold On' I do believe, but it wasn't until 'Magic Power' started getting regular rotation a year or so later, that I truely got into the band.

I remember 'Magic Power' was my favorite song for ages.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

Although I am older probaly than most of you, I still love and listen to the band. My first experience exposure to Triumph was Don Kirshner's rock concert. They were on with Mohagany Rush, I believe. Not sure what song they did (probaly off the first album), but Rick sang and it was awesome. I remember really long hair! I went out and bought progressions of power and bought probably all of them up to the last one with Rik. After Rik split the band ( I'll post to that board seperatly) I lost interest.
