    Re: Trivia

yeah...it was Hellfire...good thing Triumph was picked over that...one of the most inspirational bands in the 80's being named Hellfire would have just been wierd...Triumph fits tons better
Can't you feel the magic, feel it everywhere, Can't you hear the music, there's something in the air, There's a celebration, deep within a song, Celebrate this feeling, you know it can't be wrong

BTW Chordguy, don't forget about Ain't Talking bout love by VH and Freeze by Rush

Freeze is a great example of minimal chording! Haven't seen the sheet music, but it's a good guess that the "N.C." notation ("no chord") appears in some stretches there.

    Re: Trivia

Not to get off the topic too much, how about "Undun" by The Guess Who as the other extreme (plenty of chord changes).

    Re: Trivia

Whole Lotta Love is a two-chorder, but that's all it needed.
American Woman - what a boring song to play.
The time has come to face the music again...Back them up against the wall and bring the hammer down...

This kind of question I think needs to be qualified:

    1) What is the oldest rock band that is still together, currently active (touring or releasing new music) with the same members.

    2) Whats the oldest rock band thats still together

    Answer:
    1) Rush (32 years going on 33)
    2) Rolling Stones (older than dirt)

Groups like the Platters still perform but they no longer make new music and when they do perform, it's the same old hit songs they did in the 50's.

Technically or in terms business, Triumph is still a rock band but not active.

    Re: Trivia

I agree, PJK, although ZZ Top is the longest-running active group with the same members. It's debatable whether The Beach Boys qualify, but they've been around longer than the Stones.

And how I missed "The Lil ol' Band from Tejas"! But I didn't know they were stil 'round.

True dat Chordguy, I missed that completely!

The B-Boys? I put them in the same catagorey as the Platters. While they do the obligatory touring.....they don't put out anything new.

Hoiwever, I challenge anyone to name a more prolifec band (with 30+ years behind them then Rush...I mean "Rust"). smile.gif

    Re: Trivia

I was thinking Golden Earring, they're still touring and they've been together since '61...longer than the stones

    Re: Trivia

Golden Earring...fascinating! Never knew they were around that long. However, perhaps some more qualifiers are required. For example, The Beach Boys "formed" during the late 50s, but it wasn't until December 1961 that they released a single and played a live gig as The Beach Boys. Per Wikipedia, it looks like Golden Earring might not have done so until as late as 1965. Did they have a recording contract in 1961? I don't know.

Also per Wikipedia, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston have indicated that new Beach Boys material might be forthcoming, and one never knows what Brian Wilson might contribute. So they're an open-ended question.

Bottom line: Stones, BBs, Golden Earring are all good answers, it just depends on the criteria!

I too am surprised that a band out of the Netherlands would be considered the oldest running rock band even though they don't really have any market share or presence to speak of in the states...
