    How Did You Discover Triumph?

I'm just curious how people on the Boards discovered Triumph. Please feel free to share your stories and let everyone know what your earliest memories of the band are.

I discovered Triumph, back in about 1982, when my brother started playing guitar, and started buying albums. I used to sneak into his room and learning to play on his gear (under the threat of bodily harm) and he had Just a Game and Allied Forces lying around. So..I discovered that I could actually play the chorus of Lay It after awhile, seeing it was a nice 1, 4 , 5 progression, and I was hooked. Sadly, I learned really soon that most of the tunes were out of my reach to learn at that time, but I bought and listened to every album after that day, and saw a few shows.

That is how I was introduced to Triumph. And as a side note, my brother did find out I was playing his gear, but we went and saw a show or 2 together, and now he is a High Energy physicist, and I have a music site that has interviewed Gil and Rik, so he thinks it was all good that I got interested in playing guitar, and listening to Triumph.

I first heard them when staying in upstate NY listening to Chom FM Montreal. The station did a special on the first 2 albums and I was hooked.

That station turned me on to many great bands before I heard them in the states.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

I remember when i first started listening to fm radio in the late 70's and early 80's and hearing Hold On and I Can Survive i had no idea who the band was but i remember liking the songs, but at the time i was still into Kiss and didn't quite appreciate what i was hearing. It wasn't until 1981 when i finally started to break free from the Kiss grip and went through a kind of music transition period where i was listening to alot of southern rock such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and 38 Special. Then one day a friend introduced me to Rush via Moving Pictures and that changed everything. That same year i got turned on to Ozzy Osbourne, more importantly Randy Rhoads via Blizzard of Ozz and Van Halen's Fair Warning came out that same year and i saw VH for the frist time that year as well. I also became a big fan of Journey around this time as Escape was released this same year. But when i heard Magic Power for the first time and found out the band was called Triumph i knew i had to hear more. So i went out and bought Allied Forces with my allowance and i was hooked. Of course as i began buying their earlier albums i was pleased when i discovered that it was Triumph that played those songs i had heard during my early exposure to FM radio. Needless to say 1981 was a very important year for me.

I don't listen to Triumph as much as i used to but every now and then i'll pop one of the 3 cd's, i consider to be the cornerstone of their recording career, into the ole cd player. Allied Forces, Never Surrender and Thunder Seven. Of course Just A Game is worthy of mention and i also liked Surveilance an awful lot as well. It's too bad that was their last recording with Rik, i thought it might have been a signal of things to come, Surveilance was certainly better than The Sport Of Kings. I never got to see Triumph live but i used to rent the US festival video at my local video express and eventually i owned VHS copies of The US Festival and A Night Of Triumph but now i have the re-release DVD's and every once in awhile i'll watch them. Of all the performances on those 2 DVD's i think their performance of Never Surrender on Live At The US Festival is simply awe inspiring.

These days Dream Theater is my favorite band, the effects of 1981 have not worn off, the bands i was exposed to in that year are still very important to me and is pretty much where the bar is set in terms of the quality of music i listen to now.

I can't remember exactly when I first heard about Triumph but I do remember what made me fall in love them: Allied Forces.

For my sixteeth birthday I held a really big party and I told everyone they had to bring me an album as a present. A friend bought me Allied Forces (I know he was an early Triumph fan so maybe that's who first introduced me to the band) and later, as the party was getting going, someone threw it on the stereo. We played it all night long and for the rest of my high schools that was my album.

And ever since, Triumph has been one of my favourite bands.

    Van Halen's Fair Warning

That has got to be one of the strongest rock albums ever. One track after the other is killer. IMO VH never topped that one. I just bought it again last week for about the 5th time.

    back on topic:
I remember the first time I heard fight the good fight. I was at work and i just froze as i passed the radio. I knew who it was right away but I was like holy crap this tune is freaking great. (I think I may have been a little more colorful at the time) I couldnt belive my ears. Not many songs grab me the first time I hear them. But that one certainly did.

Re: How Did You Discover Triumph?

i first heard triumph off of one of my dad's cd's called the kings of the 70s i think...it had hold on in with a few other songs, i thought it was the best song out of the others and there was jethro tull and rod stewart and bands like that, thin lizzy, but i liked hold on the most, thats when i started to get into triumph, im only 17...i dont think i've met anyone in my whole highschool that has heard of triumph, but they're in my top 3 as far as favorite bands go..i just bought two triumph cd's today, i would have bought some earlier but i could never find them as they never really gained a whole lot of popularity...i cant figure out why all of their stuff i like, but i got allied forces and the sport of kings today, i had some of the songs downloaded, because i could never find any of their cd's in stores, but i still like all the songs i've heard by them

I didnt catch your location but Ive seen Triumph cd's new really cheap at circuit city. Actually alot of the music thats older and unpopular can be a bargain there (at least at the one here) I replaced my Aldo Nova "subject" for $6 and change.

Hey visit the "What bands are you currently listening too topic. Id like to hear what else your listening too.

In 1981 i was in high school and I needed to find a band that was suited for me. I had friends that liked rush, queen, led zeppelin. I remember listening to allied forces with the lights off and the stereo cranked up. I knew that this was the band for me.
