Triumph Rocked Sweden

There was a time when the possibility of a Triumph reunion seemed like just a fantasy but when Rik, Mike and Gil took the stage at Sweden Rock this weekend, that fantasy became a reality.

For those of us who couldn’t make it, click here to see Triumph perform Never Surrender. Then make your way over to Rockfoto.nu  to check out pictures from Saturday's event or better yet, get the first hand report from the official Triumph discussion boards.

I think it's kinda hard to judge their playing by that one video. Especially since the quality of the video was not that good. In fact I thought the video quality was bad. But good enough to give a person a small taste of what it was like.  Despite what a couple have said on this site the sound on the video was not good so you can't really start making criticisms...like whether they  were supplemented by a pre-recorded back-up track ( I watched and listened . I don't hear that..just the sound echoing sorta but the sound on the video sucked) or they are really rusty. It was taken far from the stage and probably with less than top of the line camera. Plus how do we know if the sound system on the stage was good? Did'nt they have to use whatever was there. I don't imagine they brought alot with them.
But I think after being away a little rustiness is understandable. I'm sure they will shake it all off next time they play. But some people always feel the need to find something negative in everything. All in all, from what I've seen, heard and read I think they did pretty good and we should be proud of them.
Way to go guys!! You'll always be number one in my book.

From NYC: Guys, it has been a long time, and that video and photos represent something I thought I'd never see.

I've been a fan since hearing Time Goes By on Rockline WAY back in 1984 (it was one of those "holy crap!! that's awesome moments), and I've been a fan since. Never got to see you live back in the day, but I now eagerly anticipate your proposed tour in 2K9.

Rock out and roll on guys, I thought you sounded GREAT in the video.

Peace,

I was there. Gil was a bit rusty ( drumming ) and songwise it was too safe. I expected a full version of "Hold on" at least. Rik sounded great. Can´t hit the high notes without falsetto but his voice benefits from being a bit "darker"
The setlist ( as i remember and not correct order )

When the lights
Lay it on the line
Allied forces
Live for the weekend
Magic power
Never Surrender
Rocky Moutain
RnR machine
Blinding light show
Fight the good fight

Welcome back !

Well all in all it looks good. People shouldn't compare this production to the one in the late eighty’s. That production was perfected in the eighty’s, the sound and lights were at their best.

Rik and Dave have been playing the whole time, Mike and Gil on the other hand did well all being considered,  the rust will come off as they become more comfortable in front of a crowd again.  Oklahoma show will be better, you have to remember this was a test flight to for Rik, Mike and Gil.  I hope they had fun and it wasn’t too nerve racking before they went on stage.

WE'LL GUYS IT LOOKED LIKE YOU HAD FUN. THAT'S WHAT COUNTS. MAYBE SOME SOUND PROBLEMS-BUT TAKE IN EFFECT 3 MAIN FACTORS,

                             1)  THERE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY-DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.

                              2) FIRST TIME PLAYING TOGETHER ON STAGE FOR 20 YEARS.

3)THEY ARE OLDER AND NOT IN THERE 30'S  NO MORE. ( NOT MEANING THAT IN A BAD WAY)

BUT THEY HAD FUN -ALL WE CAN HOPE FOR IS THAT COME 2009 THAT THERE WILL BE A TOUR.

Yea, sure there's a little disappointment with sound and minor goofs but all in all considering, I was more than satisfied. Everyone mentions the 2009 tour which would be AMAZING BEYOND BELIEF!!!! But no one has ever talked about the possibility of a new studio album. Does anyone think it's even remotely possible?

The main thing is they put the past behind them for the good of their fans, old and new alike. I played in bands and know how difficult it is to try to recreate something that was as good as it was in your youth. I'm proud of these guys and although I do not personally know them, I absorbed what I could growing up with them through the albums and interviews and to me they are like old friends. One of my first cassette tapes I bought as a kid was rock and roll machine from there I was hooked.
To this day the best live performance I have seen by any group ( and this spans concerts from 1979 till now ) will be Triumph in Cleveland at the Richfield theater. I think in 1987 Sport of kings tour.( same tour as the live DVD with Rick Santer on guitar ) Quite simply it could not have been improved upon, we sat right behind the soundboard and totally has our asses kicked... all night long !
For those of you who plan to see the next show I envy you. They will read these blogs and will erase any doubts if they are still capable of delivering the goods. These guys are pros, they will take the constructive critism and drive it home next time.
I will wait for the full blown tour to come, that is where they truely shine. All and all what has been said about the sweden show good and bad still it is the fact that the Machine is back! They will roll right over you ! for that I cannot wait !

This was a great moment in rock history. The Sweden Rock is very much about heavy-metal but to my surprise quite a good crowd not only showed up, they enjoyed the whole show. This was late day four of the festival and no doubt an exhausted audience. Rik/Mike/Gil looked a bit nervous and lost at very start, but they did a great job. Sound was ok and songselection perfect.

As a swedish Triumph-fan I had never expected this - and honestly there where not that many of us left. This I think was an injection to many and we hope that all you fans in Canada and US get to see the guys on stage.

To hear Lay it on the line and Blinding Light Show - beyond any expectations. The crowd was probably a bit 'calm', but I think also the average age in the crowd was 40 + and quite interested in the actual music. Congratulations to Triumph

I'm not even sure why you feel the need to insult me bobbyk. I'm not sure what scoffing you are even talking about. Strange. You must be mixing me up with someone else. I never scoffed at Rik doing a solo. Did'nt he always do one? And did'nt he always kill? I would think he would still kill at 80. Any comment I made was about people passing negative judgement on their playing by one poor video. There was one person even claiming Rik's vocals were being supplemented when I could not hear it from the video. I never once said anything about Rik doing a solo. Where did you talk about Rik doing a solo and where did I do the scoffing? How odd. I don't know what you are even talking about. Maybe you should not enter comments while smoking ganja or drinking corn mash.
However aside from the strange insult and comments  I take it that you are saying that Rik is awesome and always will be. And you are so right about that. It's good to see them on stage again and rocking. Here's hoping for more.

OK. Out of curiousity I looked back and you are way off Bobbyk. The only thing I could find was my comment about your suggestion that they also add a keyboardist besides Dave Dunlop. I merely said that they did'nt need to because Mike usually does the keyboards. I said they did'nt need more. That the more you add the more you take away. Had nothing to do with any solo Rik would do. Never scoffed at Rik doing a solo. Never happened. I do agree with your thought that Rik always kills. He is so under rated as a guitar player. I always thought he deserved alot more for his incredible guitar work and talent.

I have been a big Triumph fan since Allied Forces and I love their older material as well as up to Surveillance. Never cared too much for Edge Of Excess without Rik Emmett. Triumph has been tied as my number 1 group with Rush for 25 years plus.
It took me 18 years to finally see Rush, and now I have seen them 5 times.
My only oppurtunity to see Triumph was in 1985 on their Thunder Seven tour, but couldn't make it and thought I never would after they split. Now, that their back together, I look forward to a new album and possible tour next year. That will have taken me 26 years to finally see them. I, also look forward to seeing them as many times as I can as well as Rush. Triumph rocks and so does the city of Toronto and all of Canada with both powerhouse trios!

i am canadian and was there front row, gil sounded fine to me & it was great to see them play...hearing them do magic power was the #3 highlight of the festival for me...

it was clear this was a reunion warm-up type show for these guys to test their legs for a north american tour.... you couldn't expect them to sound note perfect.  however, whitesnake played the same time slot the night b4 and played the full 90 minutes, triumph only played 75 minutes and came on 15 minutes late, one of the few bands the whole weekend that went on late...

although i loved the show for the most part, I was disappointed in the setlist, i thought putting blinding light show in the set ate up a totally unnecessary 10 minutes of their set time, and they played it quite early in the set, and not late as someone (Dan Swano's brother?) wrote earlier on... as was rocky mtn way, they have so many other better songs, anyways that is my opinion....they played 1 song after 1981, and nothing from thunder seven...

i understand swedes like the older triumph era stuff so that's likely why they went for the older stuff, but as a canadian who grew up in the 80's i at least wanted to hear them play follow your heart, which did not happen....bummer for me...

i'm thinking the set list for rocklahoma will change as i just can't see a north american audience being okay with the swedish setlist....come on guys, you can't pretend you wrote nothing decent after 1981.  Being at the SRF show, for anyone going to rocklahoma I would expect all the bugs to be worked out and that Triumph will kick your a$$...

Re Derek from Edmonton's comments above, some factual errors:

A) Triumph was only slotted for 75 minutes as per the festival promoters and played its full time allotment.

B) Triumph did not go on 15 minutes late; their scheduled stage time was 20:15 and they went on at 20:20 and played until 21:35 (75 minutes). I was also there and saw several bands that went on 5 minutes or so late.
