Great interview and everything well stated and so true! All Triumph fans are happy about them being friends again and without that special friendship, there would still be no Triumph.
I wish you all the best Gil, Rik and Mike since I have been a dedicated fan since 1976 and if there is only a possibilty of a tour in 2009, believe me, it will be worth the wait. I*m sure I speak for thousands and thousands of other fans out there...
Best of luck guys and kick ass in Sweden!!!!!!!!!
Love that Rock and Roll machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Rik, Gil & Mike,
Growing up in the suburbs of Indianapolis, Indiana, I grew up on your music. You sure got a lot of radio airplay in Indy. "Hold On" was the first one I heard on the radio & from then on I was hooked. I would watch & listen to your records go round & round on my turntable (remember those?). I never got tired of listening to your songs & would look forward to hearing your next record.
Believe me, I know great music when I hear it. A good song will stand the test of time. I know you came through Indy many times, but it was before I became a regular concert-attender, so I never saw you live.
I had saw both your live concerts ( US Festival & A Night Of) some 20 years ago on VHS (remember those?). It was great to see them finally on DVD. (Thanks)
Guys, all I can say is that I know you have had problems with being suspicious of each other or hurt by each other ( did this have to do with song writing credits?), but from the bottom of my heart I do appreciate that you can at least for now put those differences away & remember that when the 3 of you get together on stage or in the studio, the majic power of the music comes through. Dont forget it. Keep focused. I think of all the music you 3 could have made together in the last 20 years. Who knows what could have been.
Note to Gil & MIke: "Edge of Excess" simply kicks ass from begginning to end. Great songs. I'm not kidding. (sorry Rik).
Again, dont forget about me & your fans in central FLorida. There are plenty of venues here in central Florida. I'll be waiting. C'mon guys, you could make a comeback for a few years with a couple tours or new material. Dont kill yourselves on the road. Space the nights out more. Get enough rest.
It really is time to spread the majic power of the music. Wer'e not getting any younger. I could probably come up with a killer set list. May submit later.

Dear Rik, Gil & Mike,
Here's the killer set list I've come up with, thinking back to recent concerts in the last few years I've attended that had a good flow to the songs in they're proper place.
First of all, in summary, let's start & end this show with real slammers, go immediately from first song to second without stopping, take the pace down about the third song, then the meat & potatoes, Rik comes out to do a short acoustical solo, followed out by Gil who accompanies him to the acoustical begginning of "I Can Survive", followed by full band to ending of "I Can Survive", then 2 songs featuring drum & guitar solos, followed by the classics everyone's waited for & (1) final encore appearance.
We'll represent most of the albums, I personally think "Edge of Excess" has many great songs on it, but will avoid it since Rik was not involved in this album. I'm not sure about "Allied Forces" song? Should this be included? It's a slammer, but I'm not sure.
Remember not to pause too long inbetween songs at the begginning as this slows the pace of the concert down too quickly.
    O.k., here we go:

    1.  Intro only to "Fight the Good Fight"
    2.  "I LIve for the Weekend"- dont stop- go immediately to:
    3.  "Tear the Roof Off"- stop
    4.   "Lay it on the Line"- dont stop- go immediately to:
    5.   "Never Surrender"- stop.
    6.   "When the Lights Go Down"- stop.
    7.    Rik accoustical solo- "Fantasy Serenade"- Gil comes out to join Rik for
accoustical begginning to "I Can Survive"- Gil returns & full band finishes
    8.    "I Can Survive"- electric.
    9.    "Follow Your Heart" (short drum solo in the middle)- dont stop- go on to:
   10.   "Rock & Roll Machine" (short guitar solo in the middle)- stop
   11.    Intro & "Fight the Good Fight"- stop

   Encore:
    12.  Thanks to the fans & "Majic Power"- dont stop- go immediately to:
    13.  Hot Time (In This City Tonight)

I think Jon wants to be your tour manager if the job ever comes up.  I have seen Triumph several times in the old days (I'm 46)and while it has been 20 yrs I'm sure they still know how to put on a great show. While you were getting dizzy watching the records on the turntable they were planning and executing awesome concerts. lol

Dear Guys,
I feel a need to respond to Dan B's comment. It's probably not necessary & it doesnt amount to much of anything in the world we live in, but here it goes-
Dan B- I think it's great you got ot see them all those years ago, I wasnt quite as fortunate. The VHS tapes from 20 years ago & recent DVD releases remind me that I know they have always known how to put on a good show. My opinions or suggestions are only that- opinions & suggestions- no one has to take it seriously.
Actually I thought you were pretty funny when you said that "while I was getting dizzy watching they're records go round & round, you were on your way to one of they're awesome shows. That's pretty funny.
Everyone knows they can plan a good show on they're own & I'm not going to be they're tour manager anytime soon. Get real, dude.
As a guitar player myself for many years & after seeing many recent reunion concerts, such as Queen, Kiss, Rush & other groups such as Black Label Society, Slipknot, etc., I can appreciate how the orientation of songs & pace can deliver a memorable show you will be tellling your friends about for a long time.
Didn't I hear Gil recently say at least he was interested in hearing what songs the fans want to hear? C'mon Dan B- I'll be watching for your list of songs on this comment site. Take care & I hope they play your hometown soon.
 Sincerely, Jon

Hey Anders in Sweden,
Not to get off the subject of Triumph, but I would sure love to see some of the bands from your area play here in central Florida- such as Hammerfall, Dream Evil, Krokus, etc. Florida doesnt seem to be a destination for these bands. Maybe they have played in Florida in the past years, but not recently. Still waiting for Saxon.
Anyway, back to the subject of Triumph. You're right. I did focus on most of the older songs from the late 70's & early 80's. The list of songs could also include later songs from the mid to late 80's & even the 1993 "Edge of Excess" album which totally kicks ass from begginning to end.
How about other songs such as:
      1. Tears in the Rain
      2. Somebody's Out There
      3. Hooked On You
      4. Cool Down
      5. Rock Out, Roll On
      6. Time Goes By
      7. Spellbound
      8. Never Say Never
      9. Rock You Down
     10. Ridin' High Again
     11. Troublemaker
     12. Boy's Night Out
     13. Battle Cry
     14. A World of Fantasy
I guess the possibilities of songs could be endless. They could play for 3 hours in a 2 part show like Rush has done recently with no opening band. Would'nt that be something to see. I know, get real, man. A 3 hour show? Whew!
Hey Anders, I hope you enjoy seeing Triumph there in Sweden.
Sincerely, Jon

Wow, I think you need to lighten up there Jon . The comment about wanting to be a tour manager was a joke.  Yes , Gil did say something about being interested on what the fans would like to hear. That's cool.  But yours was more like a lecture. You're practically talking to them (if they actually read the comments on here)like they've never done this before. Like you were a manager telling them what to do. In your enthusiasm you went a little over board there. So I was teazing you about it. I can understand it though and being excited about the possibilty of seeing them in concert again. I meant no offense. You actually did'nt quite read me right there. I never said that "while you were getting dizzy watching they're records go round & round, I was on my way to one of they're awesome shows." It was more like " While you were getting dizzy watching the records on the turntable they were planning and executing awesome concerts. lol" But whatever. It just would be nice if someone quoted me right on this site for once.
I'm not saying your list was stupid. It was a real good one. It was the lecture tone around it that I was teazing you about. It's no big deal. Maybe it's been 20 yrs but they still know what to do. I'm not submitting a list because to me it doesn't matter what they play...I know I'll love it. I know they'll put on a good show no matter what they decide is on the song list. But that's just me. One of the main reasons they are doing this is for fun...so play what you want guys and have fun.....I just wanna see it.
I don't know. I'm a Canadian and you're an American Jon so maybe there'a a communication gap there. I've submitted before only to be jumped on by Americans when I meant no harm. But the written word can sometimes be misconstrued.
What's with almost every guy or girl that plays an instrument or is an amatuer musician thinking they are an authority on it. I've encountered that alot on here and elsewhere. Like they know it all and need to talk down to us non musicians. I've offered an opinion and had them jump on it. I may not play an instrument but I know what I like and what I don't like. But because I don't play an instrument....
I once worked with this guy that was an amature musician or 'hobbist' as he sometimes called it who spent so much time cutting down the ones that made it and what they should be doing or how bad they are etc. Yet here he was working a regular job while these so called terrible musicians were succeeding. If he was so good and they were so bad.... Well , it doesn't matter. I'm not saying that's you but there are shades of it in your words. Take a valium and loosen up there....you're wound abit too tight.
I'm done here and am not going to comment any further on this subject. Let's all just hope that we get to see the guys rock in our own hometowns or close by.
Adios.

Ok so I should unwind too. lol I have to say your lists themselves Jon are good and you're right on about your assessment of Edge of Excess. I doubt they would even consider any of the songs on it and that's totally understandable.....that was a different band from the current and long time configuration of the band. But the last list you posted would be a great ....'greatest of' CD would'nt it? Despite my throwing it back at ya abit nasty in my previous post I am glad to see someone else liking EOE. It seems to me that too few on here like that cd.  could be wrong but it seems that way.
Anyway, I'll take some valium and loosen up too. lol

i think excess is a good hard rockin cd.I think the guitar(eve though it's not rik) and the vocals are really great (it's hard to follow the story line of some of the songs though).Anyway its a good record i think not why a lot of people didn't pay much attention to it is the fact that it wasn't rik that was playing guitar, like i said before nobody and i repeat nobody can replace rik emmett,he's just too good.It wasn't the real band and that's what usually happens when an inportant member of a band leaves for whatever reason.Anyway im still compltetly amazed that they are accually talking together again let alone playing together again it's simply amazing. The rock and roll machine is back and it's flipping amazing.

Dear Dan B,
I'm glad you responded a third time. I was honestly not going to post any other comments on this website & shut the computer off & go to bed. It's late & I guess I'm tired. I'm sorry if you've had problems with Americans jumping on your case.
We're not all that bad. Besides arent we your southern cousins way down here?
I'm really not that uptight, but if I sound too preachy, sorry. Maybe I got to passionate about this band & went overboard about the memories from the past.
Youre right, we really dont know if anyones reading any of this. I know me & you are. Valium sounds good. So does Ativan. At least they're in the same family.
Bickering about Triumph seems a bit silly. We must both have strong feelings about this band. I hope if any of the guys read any of my postings they wont think I'm lecturing them. Everyone needs to loosen up & enjoy theyre precious time here on earth & celebrate good health if they have it.
Again you're right, "Edge of Excess" has excellent songs on it. I found it by accident a few years ago at a used cd shop in Gainseville, FL. Gil sings very well on this album & it has a powerful sound to it. I even posted a song suggestion on Dee Sniders House of Hair for "Ridin High Again". Maybe they'll actually play it. Who knows.
That second list of songs I posted was a response to a fan in Sweden who wanted to hear more recent songs at the Sweden Rock Festival. They really do have quite a catalogue of songs to choose from, dont they.
Dan B- I usually dont take any time to post comments on websites cause I'm so busy here, as I know you are, too, but I will check back from time to time to see if you have any other thoughts about Triumph. This blogging may become addictive.
Check out Ocala if you ever have the chance. We have beautiful countryside here.

After reading Gil's interview it's good to hear that they've been busy running Metalwork's studio & doing other things. Being at that point in your life where touring would just be something you do only for the fun & enjoyment of it, instead of having to do it because of financial neccessity, sounds great.
I"ve heard a lot of bands in semi-retirement have to go back on the road cause the bills are piling up. Sounds like Triumph doesnt need to tour but is interested in touring & picking up where they left off 20 years ago.
As has been asked on this message board, will the guys write new material or release previous unheard of stuff? We hope so.
Did anyone out there notice & remember the front cover of the vinyl record of "Rock & Roll Machine", featuring a live shot with explosions? And did you notice when the new record company bought the cataloge & re-released them back in the 90's, that there appeared to be (2) albums represented at the begginning with songs I had not heard of. Was this original material that didnt appear on the first album?
Maybe Triumph released an album previous to "Rock & Roll Machine"? I was wondering if I had missed something all those years ago.
Sincerely, Jon

Glad Dan B and Jon in Ocala made up.  : )  It's just good to see posts on Triumph alive and well.  I am a 46 year old fan as well and have been waiting decades to see they guys play again.  I'll let the decisions on the set list up to them.  But I agree with most of the requests I've seen here, although I'd really love to hear "Nature's child" live.
Hey wouldn't it be the ultimate dream come true if they hooked up with Rush to co-headline a tour?
But, I'd definitely love to hear some new material.  At least some teasers like "Mind Games" on the end of the live album.
Hey Gil, if you do read the blogs, make sure you book the Giant Center in Hershey, PA when you do the tour.  It's a great new venue with lots of Central, PA rockfans.  And, yes.....play Allied Forces!

Anders, man are you lucky. I just read the list of bands at the SRF this year. I would love to see Triumph, Saxon(one of my favorites), Priest, the Leppards, Whitesnake(Coverdale is always great) & even Fastway(I was a fan of this band in the mid 80's).
Hope you enjoy the show. I was wondering. Does Sweden have a metal festival that features other metal bands from Europe, the Netherlands, Norway, etc.?
I heard Dee Snider say on his House of Hair show in the past years that Triumph, in his opinion, was considered sudo-metal (did I spell that right?)
Anyway, I've always thought of them as a hard-rock band, not metal. whereas, lets say Judas Priest would be more metal. I guess what he meant was that sudo-metal is when you've cranked your guitar loudness up to 10, but turned the distortion down a bit? I dont mean to get too technical.
Basically, all rock & metal music is loud music that's turned up to 10. The distortion effect kind of changes the intensity to another realm.
I've always said that it doesnt matter how lickity-split fast you can play on the neck of the guitar, if the song is'nt any good, then it is'nt any good. Fast playing wont neccessarily mean a good song. I like what KISS says- keep it simple, stupid.
Dont get me wrong. They're are a few current metal bands that blow me away with they're song writing & image. It's great. Fast playing in drop D or C. Wow!
Triumph, again, knows how to write a good song that can stand the test of time.

Sincerly, Jon, from the land of the southern YANK-EES (what is that anyway?)

Hey dhentes - Rock & Roll Machine was primarily the vehicle for Rik's extended electric guitar solo in the live shows - the solo could be done within the context of another song (Cool Down, for example - which already is pretty riff heavy). I'd rather hear a few extra songs that didn't get played live a lot in the past.

As long as I get to hear Time Goes By and Ordinary Man live, I will be happy.
You know what the best thing about being a Triumph fan is? Intelligent lyrics, a positive message, and stellar musicianship. In an age where new music is all about promoting the pimp lifestyle and/or trying to sound like a Simple Plan clone, I find myself more and more listening to old Triumph records just to hear someone sing about something with meaning.

One of the things I will always remember from the 87 Sport of Kings show, I was maybe four feet from the stage and just staring at Rik's fingers on the fret board as he soloed was just insane. His hand literally became a blur at the climax to Midsummer Daydream. He's the most underrated rock guitarist of all time. A lot of other guys get more glory, but Rik is a friggin God. Come to think of it, it would be cool if they did some kind of extended acoustic and/or instrumental segment within the show. Their instrumentals were always great.

I saw Triumph for the first time in 1979 with the opening band The Godz.......I was 15 and was just blown away and saw them 6 times after that. This is my life according to Triumph.

"In The Beginning" I thought I was a "Street Fighter" and lived the wild life "24 Hours A Day". Then I saw Triumph for the first time and was blown away by their "Blinding Light Show" and wanted to live the "Easy Life" of the "Rock and Roll Machine". But then I met my " Little Texas Shaker" who told me it "Takes Time" to make time with her. So I decided to "Bring It On Home" to her everyday. We got married at 16 and although we were in Texas and not on the "New York City Streets" it was tough. We had a son on the way and life was not "Just A Game" anymore. Although we were "Young Enough To Cry" we knew we had to "Hold On" and "Lay It On The Line" if we  were gonna keep "Moving On". We had a "Hard Road" but we still liked to "Tear The Roof Off" thats why we "LOVE TRIUMPH". Little did we know at the time but our "Nature's Child" would become more than a "Ordinary Man" but a member of the "Allied Forces" a United States Marine and would "Fight The Good Fight" so that everybody would have the "Magic Power" that GOD gave them. Maybe this is a little "Too Much Thinking" but It's been " A World Of Fantasy" for me and my wife, We vowed to take it "All The Way" and "Never Surrender" and when the "Lights Go Down" we will know we will "Never Surrender" because the "The Writing On The Wall" will leave us "Spellbound". We still like to "Rock Out Roll On but as  we "Followed Our Heart "and as"Time Goes By" we always prayed that TRIUMPH would tour again. After year of "Killing Time" its like a "Midsummer's Daydream" that has come true. For "Just One Night" Triumph Fans will " Take A Stand" and let everybody know that "Somebody's Out There" and we are still " Hooked On You" We wish this would last forever because this is "What Rules My Heart". Even if it rains at Rocklahoma there will be "Tears In The Rain" because we know that  we are "Playing With The Fire" and for "Just One Night" I will know that that I have one more night and I will ask God "Don't Take my Life" before I have the chance to have my "Fantasy Serenade" one more time..............LOL..........

I Don't have tickets for ROCKLAHOMA but working on that now ...........

TRIUMPH RULE'S MY HEART AND WILL RULE OKLAHOMA..........

dear triumph,    i just heard "hold on" on music choice channel of comcasts" arena rock channel.  it brought back memories. i punched in triumph on the toolbar of the internet and started to browse around on your website.  let me tell ya, triumph is my all-time favorite band. i have all your records ( on cassetts) except for the one recorded live in cleveland, ohio in 1981. i have that one on cd in my vehicle at all times.  i've seen triumph twice ( thunder seven and sport of kings).  i'm just so excited to hear about your reunion gig in sweden and hopefully a world tour in 2009.  please include philadelphia, pennsylvania in this tour.  we have two outdoor stadiums ( baseball, football)  and two indoor arenas ( hockey/basketball, minor league hockey) all in the same sports complex in south philadelphia. i'm 40 y.o. and haven't been to a concert since the mid 1990's.  TRIUMPH ROCKS !!!!   please stay healthy and safe for your gigs and see ya in 2009.

I'm from Italy and since I have played their LP "Rock & Roll Machine" in the 1981 I was hitted by the greatest power of this group and fantastic style of Rik. Since then I never miss to hear their music...bye.

Hey Jon in Ocala, I don't think Rush ever "broke up", therefore they are not on a reunion tour.
